This is easily one of the toughest boss battles yet, taking place in a massive, wide-open arena with nowhere to hide from the Badassasaurus - Piston's fire-breathing, missile-launching, Zero-smashing monster of a monster truck. Thankfully, when it comes to the final boss himself, big, bad Piston, Gearbox doesn't mess around. She actually exploded in a blaze of flesh and metal before she had the chance to talk suitable smack or unleash her minions. In particular, third-ranked Motor Momma, the cannibal motorcycle queen, was annoyingly easy to defeat with a quick Slag grenade and a flurry of flesh-burning fire rounds from my level 33 Zero's sniper rifle. It's a simple concept, but there's just one problem: you really only face two bosses before Piston, and they can both be dispatched without breaking a sweat. As the highest-ranked arena contestant, Piston and three other contestants stand between you and glorious, glittering loot. When I wasn't tracking down yummy snacks for Tina, I was working my way up to Piston. Motor Momma, the cannibal motorcycle queen, was annoyingly easy to defeat. The result is a consistently hilarious six-hour run through Pandora (potentially much, much longer if you veer off the main quest line) and some of the finest writing in the series. Mad Moxxi also returns, bringing over-the-top sexual innuendo, and newcomer Piston delivers a terrific voice performance as a braggadocio arena champion and professional backstabber. It turns into a mission of sabotage when one machine doles out an oatmeal and raisin cookie instead of chocolate chip. The grade school explosives expert sent me on an arduous, movie montage-like training mission - of course, Tina's version of running up a snow-covered mountain with a yoke on your back while Burgess Meredith questions your manhood is invading Torgue's arena and stealing delicious chocolate-chip cookies from its various robot-guarded vending machines. Once you've parked, though, this is as good as Borderlands has ever been, and I found the Tiny Tina-focused portion especially funny. It could use an injection of ridiculousness, but it doesn't get one here. Yet no matter how upbeat that bass-filled driving combat music is, getting behind the wheel and doing bland, repetitive battle is a downer compared to ability fueled on-foot shootouts. The main map, the Badass Crater of Badassitude, includes a giant race track tailor-made for car-nage, and some missions feature driving front and center. Torgue and his entire DLC expansion as the best thing to happen on Pandora since Handsome Jack. Up until the first driving-heavy mission, I was ready to label Mr. Torgue's arena, sums up his character: "I'M HERE TO ASK YOU ONE QUESTION AND ONE QUESTION ONLY: EXPLOSIONS!" One delightful line, screamed shortly after you arrive at Mr. Torgue is omnipresent, frequently adding his TWO CENTS to whatever it is you're doing. You never face him in battle or even see him up close and personal, but the Macho Man Randy Savage homage Mr. Getting behind the wheel and doing bland, repetitive battle is a downer compared to on-foot shootouts.
